Wilderness escapes come in many different forms… a desert island, cave cocoon, forest retreat, or perhaps our favorite away-from-it-all place, Jongomera camp in the remote south-western corner of Tanzania’s Ruaha National Park. This place really is the epitome of wild Africa. It’s so peaceful, vast and totally unlike anything else. The last time we flew in, our landing was delayed due to elephants on the red dirt runway! Not a bad excuse. Set on the sandy banks of a seasonal river (dried up when we visit), the camp is in the middle of breath-taking scenery. The wildlife use the riverbed like a road – you never know what is going to come along next – so we sit on the deck, cameras at the ready! After trips out seeing the animals and landscape, we love coming back to our cosy bed warmed by a hot water bottle, feeling snug and content and listening to the sounds of Africa. It’s so still, you can hear the lions calling to each other. One night we had a nocturnal visitor. Woken by cracking branches, holding our breath and keeping quiet, we glimpsed an elephant that had clambered up the river bank to snack on grass next to our tent. There was only three meters between us! This is heaven. It’s something truly special.
